CH 1: The Revolution is Just the Beginning

Case Study

1.      Why does Google view Pinterest as a competitor?

Initially, when Pinterest had first entered the market they were known as a social media source that allows users to save and collect things as pins, which caused them to view other social media outlets, i.e. Facebook and Instagram, as competitors. However, Pinterest began to expand their business model to include search engines. This caused Google to come into their scope of competitors due to their expansive search engine that almost everyone uses. As such, Google has firmly cemented itself as number one and is far ahead of its competitors, such as Pinterest and the ever-fading Bing. However, by targeting a segment at which they can get the competitive advantage, then they may be able to achieve overtaking Google in certain aspects.

2.      Why does Pinterest focus on the smartphone platform when it develops new features and products?

Pinterest’s focuses usage on the mobile technology due to their ability to widely expand their usage across various platforms. Pinterest is not limited to one type of software, but expands to multiple types and uses their browser to operate their app. Mobile devices can be used anywhere compared to the restricted desktop and less restricted laptop. The main advantage is that the user has ease of access, which allows them to pick up their device and make quick decisions and allows frequent accessibility.

3.      Why is copyright infringement a potential issue for Pinterest?

Pinterest is facing copyright infringement due to their usage of other company’s images and brand names. Although Pinterest created a term of service, to potentially avoid any lawsuit, the company is still violating their policies and trying to opt out of any punishment. They also tried to automatically add citations and say that they comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, but the company is not proactive in this venture. Pinterest is the company with the highest usage of brands without any partnership, which means that they have not been acknowledged or paid the other company involved. Overall, Pinterest has been known for their usage of other company’s images without consent and seems willing to do anything possible to continue with this method.

Project Questions

1. Which features does the company implement well, and which features poorly, in your opinion?

Dear CEO, we are reaching out to express our evaluation of your company: Amazon. Your company has reached acceptable performance in each one of these categories: Ubiquity, Global reach, Richness, Interactivity, Information density, Personalization, and Social technology. The most exceptional of which would include, Ubiquity and Global reach since your company’s technology is available for almost everyone that has access to a device and it has the ability to ship and manufacture goods from all over the world. However, Amazon is lacking in Universal standards due to shipment costs without purchasing a $119 membership first. Although considering the benefit of underlying shipping costs, we believe that it may be a necessity to continue this without going bankrupt.

4. Prepare a brief report or presentation on how companies are using Instagram or another company of your choosing as a social e-commerce platform.

Social media is a wide influence throughout the world today and generates additional revenue for business through advertisement of their business. When a company chooses their social media outlet, they have to first determine their target audience. If their target audience is more likely to be watching videos then something like YouTube would be the best choice since an ad can be inserted. A company should also consider the overall logistics of the company and look at the views per click that are generated through a social media source. Finally, the company should also consider their objectives by using social media, are they trying to get more attention for a product, events, or to promote their goodwill in the communities. These determining factors are some of the things that a company should consider before choosing a social media platform.
