Chapter 10

Amazon’s Twitch

About Twitch:

Founded in June 2011, Twitch is the world’s leading social video platform and community for gamers, video game culture, and the creative arts. Each day, close to 10 million visitors gather to watch and talk about video games with more than 2 million streamers.

The Numbers:

 9.7 million daily active users

2+ million unique streamers per month

17+ thousand members of the Twitch Partner Program

106 minutes watched per person per day

2+ million peak concurrent sitewide viewers

46+ million raised by the Twitch community for charity

Why Invest in Twitch:

From Business Insider:

“And Amazon is here, mainly to promote Amazon Lumberyard, its new service for helping developers build games and host them with the AWS cloud. You may have heard about Lumberyard's terms of service, which say that you can get out of a contract only in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

And right next to the Amazon booth? A Twitch booth, boasting "Twitch Dev Success."

See, Lumberyard and Twitch offer tools to help developers include the game-broadcasting service straight into their apps. It means that game developers can include new tools that let players interact directly with the strangers watching them play and vice versa.”

Personal Opinion:

I personally feel that Amazon is out there not only to help themselves, but to also help others. Offering another application that video game designers and players can design games and then present those on a social network is very powerful. Based on Twitch’s millions of users a day, I think you would be crazy not to invest in something that has such a powerful user base.
