Chapter 5

What would you do?

2. A coworker confides to you that he is going to begin sending emails to your employerís internal corporate blog site, which serves as a suggestion box. He plans to use an anonymous remailer and sign the messages ďAnonymous.Ē Your friend is afraid of retribution from superiors but wants to call attention to instances of racial and gender discrimination observed during his five years as an employee with the firm. What would you say to your friend?

Answer: I will said to her/him that itís okay as long as he/she doesnít have a bad intention of doing such thing. And Iíll tell her that I do understand that it is a part of anonymous expression, because he/she is afraid of retribution. Anonymous expression is part of Freedom of Expression and everyone has the right to express what they want in any ways but they should know their limitations.

4. Imagine that you receive a strongly worded hate email at your school or job that threatens physical violence toward you. What would you do? Does your school or workplace have a policy that covers such issues?

Answer:† For me, it really depends on what hate email is sent to me, if it is not that important then I will just ignore it but if it is too personal and it really threatens me then that would be the time that I will do such actions. I donít really know if our school has a policy that cover such issue.

Critical Thinking Question

Case1

1.†††††† I think that Techdirt is an important independent media resource worth protecting. They have big numbers of visitors every months and I think this is an important website. In this case, I think it should worth to protect.

2.†††††† When I watched this video. I think that Ayyadurai presents a strong and convincing argument that he invented email. Because in his presentation, he gave out the proofs and he build the reputation for himself.

3.†††† Masnick must find evidence to prove that email is not owned by him whereas Ayyadurai must prove to the attorney that he is the creator with more details in the court. I think demanding to take down the site of Masnick is a winning strategy as it is a way to influence people that action is being taken and attempt has been made to prove who is the inventor of email.

Case 2

1.†††† †The alternatives I would say is that the country should not block the sites and links, they should give a person a freedom of what they want to see and watch, the alternative is to let the people see and search and look whatever they like to do with the internet. This change will let people to feel more in control as time will help it to be a part of like as it is for the rest of the world.

2.†††††† Global internet users will not be happy when the censors take control of what is being posted by a user as it is totally against the law for free to speak and write. It should only focus on terrorist or any kind of attack that can cause an imbalance in the society which should be censored so, companies should think about the merits and demerits before entering the Chinese market if they can provide what they are asking for.

3.†††††† All over the world today, both in developing and developed states, liberal democracies and less free societies, there are groups who struggle to gain full access to freedom of expression for a wide range of reasons including poverty, discrimination and cultural pressures. While attention is often, rightly, focused on the damaging impact discrimination or poverty can have on peopleís lives, the impact such problems have on freedom of expression is less rarely addressed.
