C A S E††† S T U D Y††† Q U E S T I O N S

1.      Why does Pinterest view Google as its primary competitor?

a.     Pinterest viewís Google as its primary competitor because most people use Google to search for what they are looking for. Many people use Pinterest to get ideas or inspiration, even when they donít know exactly what theyíre looking for. Pinterest wants to be the place that people go to when they are searching for ideas, and they are slowly becoming so. I use Pinterest when I want to see lots of images and different ideas. Google images isnít always the best quality. Many things that are Pinterest can also be searched for on Google, so thatís a big reason why theyíre a competitor.

2.     Why does Pinterest focus on the smartphone platform when it develops new features and products?

a.     The majority of Pinterestís traffic activity is originated by mobile devices, considering that most of its activity comes from mobile devices, it makes sense that they focus on the smartphone platform when developing new features and products. When youíre on Pinterest on a mobile device, you can constantly scroll through images without ever having to leave one page. Most people use smartphones instead of desktops nowadays, so Pinterest wants to focus on what people are using the most. Users can also purchase items through Pinterest using the mobile app. It saves lots of time.

3.     Why is copyright infringement a potential issue for Pinterest?

a.     Copyright infringement is a potential issue for Pinterest because the users post pictures from other people without any kind of permit. This is causing Pinterest some problems, furthermore, they are having similar issues with videos posted from YouTube and similar sources. Sometimes pins have to be deleted because they belong to someone who didnít want them use publicly. Iíve had this happen with a couple pins on my page, they simply delete the pins and nothing else happens so I donít think itís a huge deal. Most of the pins are put online to be used and shared by everyone.

3. Given the development and history of e-commerce in the years from 1995-2015, what do you predict we will see during the next five years of e-commerce? Describe some of the technological, business, and societal shifts that may occur as the Internet continues to grow and expand. Prepare a brief presentation or written report to explain your vision of what e-commerce will look like in 2019.

E-commerce is increasing potentially every year, and this tendency is going to continue during the following years.

This evolution is changing the way consumers buy and the way business sale their products and services. Every year the volume of sales that customer make online increase. A good example of this is how Amazon and other websites are continuosly increasing their sales.  My expectations are that by 2019, mostly of the population will make most of their buying operations online, from buying groceries and clothes to buy a TVs and furniture. This change will also change the labor demand, for instance, the demand of cashier will be reduced but the number of people that knows how to manage a website and sell online will increase, and that is already happening today.

Some people would say that the world is moving to a world ďdominated by computersĒ, but I do not see that way. I think technology if it is well used, is facilitating our life, and has found the ďconvenienceĒ, this word that is used more and more every day by multinational companies and marketing strategies, that the customers and the society were looking for.

4. Prepare a brief report or presentation on how companies are using Instragram or another company of your choosing as a social e-commerce platform.

When companies use Instagram, they are creating a visual platform for potential customers to view. When people see lots of images together in one easy to access page, they are more likely to be interested in the product. Many companies are using Instagram to promote their products because itís an easy way for them to connect with millions of people on one social media account. You can also buy ad space on Instagram, so when people are scrolling on their home feed, your ad will appear. Instagram drives more engaged traffic than any other social channel. Research shows that when comparing time on site from various social channels, Instagram beats out other sites like Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, Reddit, and more. Additionally, Instagram helps you engage with your audience on the social platform, increasing the chance that you can bring customers back for repeat purchases. If someone buys from you and then follows you on Instagram, theyíre likely to see your brand on a regular basis and purchase from you again. Also, returning customers are more valuable, accounting for nearly 33.3% of the overall money spent in eCommerce and spending nearly 3x more than regular shoppers. (source:
